The group was formed in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala. He named the group after his hometown, Ladysmith. It was initially composed of family members and cousins. Later, they included members unrelated to Shabalala.
In the 1980s, the group was featured on Paul Simon’s tour. This made them known to the world. Soon, they were recording albums and performing concert tours throughout the world.
